An introduction to Riu Palace Macao

Palace by name and palatial by nature, the Riu Palace Macao brings a touch of colonial grandeur to Portland's collection. All arches, domes and spires, it looks like a slice of British India from the outside. On the inside meanwhile, dark wood panelling, chandeliers and marble are reminiscent of Victorian Britain. And it all sits on the edge of Bavaro's beach, so location-wise it's spot on.

Room-wise, expect more of the same. Decorated in a timeless combination of cream and gold, they're a taste of old England. Think carved dark wood furniture, rugs on tiled floors and elegant wing chairs. And bringing things into the 21st century are mod cons like satellite TVs and RIU's spirit dispensers.

Not to be outdone, the cruciform pool takes centre-stage in the hotel gardens. Dotted with fountains and statues of mermaids, it's framed by a spacious sun terrace. Palm trees, white canvas parasols and sun loungers complete the picture.

As for restaurants, the hotel's got a great selection. There's an international buffet, a Japanese, steakhouse, Italian and a fusion food restaurant. What's more, there are as many bars as there are restaurants, plus entertainment on tap at the casino and Copacabana amphitheatre. On top of all that there's a daily entertainment programme for kids aged four to twelve.

We chose this hotel after we had our holiday to riu tequila in mexico cancelled due to hurricane wilma. We can only say what a great holiday we had and the staff were very friendly. It was 2 weeks of pure relaxation and pampering. Food and drinks... more on this review
