Casa Do Monte Novo

You don't often come across villas like the Monte Novo. The owner's an architect, who designed and built it himself. So not only is it unique, it's beautifully finished, too.

A white, cube-shaped building, its space has been used to good effect. On the ground floor, the four bedrooms sit side by side. Each one has large French windows which lead out on to a terrace that's screened from its neighbour. And better still, just steps away is the private pool, bordered by a smart decked area. There's a large lawn to the side, too.

The first floor is probably the most impressive. A huge open-plan space, it looks out over the countryside through floor-to-ceiling windows that run the entire length of the room. One half of it is taken up by the lounge and the other by the kitchen and dining area. And if you step outside, there's a balcony and roof terrace.

As for the decor, think Hollywood Hills with traditional touches. The floors are a mix of polished wood and glossy tiles. The furnishings and walls work a palette of creme-caramel, vanilla and white. And everything is luxurious, from the contemporary kitchen to the plump pillows.

One of the Monte Novo's other big selling points is the setting. On its own secluded plot, it looks out over open countryside with the Paderne Hills in the distance. It's wonderfully peaceful, but you're not too far away from it all. The local shops are a kilometre or so away, so you can walk or nip there in the car. And it's about a 15-minute drive down to the beach. All in all a great villa.
