Guide to Corralejo

"Charming Corralejo boasts a lovely village feel plus a vast expanse of sands and wind-scuptured dunes."

Sun, sea, sand they're here by the bucket load. On the northern tip of Fuerteventura, Corralejo is the island's biggest resort and offers bliss-inducing beaches that'll put demanding sun-and sand-lovers on cloud nine.

Once a tiny fishing village, the resort still retains the air of the small port it once was. Surrounded by tasteful modern buildings, the original square is still the main hub of activity although the main drag, with its medley of beach and gift shops, competes hard.

Staying in town is a genuine option thanks to the delightful central beach. Whether you're holidaying with kids or not, its soft, clean sands are lapped by sheltered, emerald-green waters perfect for splashing around in.

And behind the sands, a huddle of amiable restaurants and bars offer welcome refreshment when the heat gets too much. Stroll around and take your pick from English fish and chips, pizzas or traditional Canarian paella.

But it's to the south that Corralejo notches up beach brownie points. Here, along the eastern coast, you'll find endless gorgeous sands and mountainous dunes, lined up like giant beanbags. Add the aquamarine waters and the cooling breezes – and you're in beach heaven. Be careful though, the currents can be fairly strong.

You'll never be at a loss for things to do here. Ride a glass-bottomed boat to the volcanic Isla de Lobos to seek out sandy coves.

Or peep around Fuerteventura's former capital Betancuria, deep inland, with its picturesque church and museum. Come sunset, return to base to enjoy its low-key, bustling nightlife. Most evenings in Corralejo amount to a leisurely starlit supper followed by a chill-out at one of the relaxed bars or discos in its centre.
