Tucked away under huge volcanic cliffs, the beachside village of Puerto Naos is a world away from your typical Canarian resort. It's quiet. It's peaceful. And it's completely void of concrete and neon. In fact, up until a few years ago, the village was a merely a landing place for banana and fishing boats. Fast-forward to today and its tranquil setting has made it a favourite with the jet-set. The real magnet, predictably, is the beach. A 500-metre stretch of black volcanic sand, it's dotted with giant palms and fronted by the clear waters of the Atlantic. It's also the sunniest point on the island, so swimming and sunbathing weather is pretty much guaranteed. Step away from the beach and you'll come to Puerto Naos village. Made up of just a few residential streets and a shop-and-restaurant-lined boulevard, it has a relaxed and low-key vibe about it. The nightlife, although lively by La Palma's standards, is laid-back too, and mainly centred around restaurants and hotels. Its own charms aside, Puerto Naos is a great base for exploring La Palma. The village is just a ten-minute drive from La Caldera de Taburiente National Park, home to a ten-kilometre-long volcanic rock wall and the highest point on the island. Pueblo Parque, a pretty botanical garden with over 6,000 species of tropical plants, is about the same distance away, too. La Palma is also well-known for its outdoor activities and there are plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking in the countryside surrounding Puerto Naos.
