Guide to El Medano

'Make for the waves or soak up the sun, with the longest natural beach in Tenerife, El Medano is the place to be.'

Translated, El Medano means 'the sand dune'. And you'll soon see why. Home to the largest natural beach in Tenerife, El Medano boasts two kilometres of soft, dimpled sands that coast up to Montana Roja. And that's why people flock here. Whether it's for sunbathing, scuba-diving or windsurfing, the gently sloping sands, clear sea and warm climes appeal to a wide audience. Chief among them are watersports enthusiasts. In fact, the windsurfing here is so good that international championships are commonplace. Wander away from the beach however, and you'll come to the narrow streets of El Medano town. Once a humble fishing village, El Medano has now reached the happy medium of bustling, middleweight resort. Polish your bartering skills at the market or stock up on duty-free in shops that line the streets. Come evening, track down the town square where bars, pavement cafes and restaurants are lively – but never overbearing. El Medano has some great attractions nearby, too. There's Eagle Park in Los Cristianos where birds of prey swoop perilously close above heads, plus two nature reserves - Montana Roja and Montana Pelada. Both within striking distance, these volcanoes make for a dramatic backdrop to El Medano.
