An introduction to Switzerland

Whether it's the lakes, chocolate, watches, the Alps, or just their famed neutrality, a holiday to Switzerland offers a wealth of history, culture and activities to enjoy. Founded 700 years ago, Switzerland is now a multicultural and hospitable country and home to 7.4 million people. The vast majority of these are German speaking, although French also features heavily.

Nowadays, holidays to Switzerland cater to a huge range of tastes. There is, of course, the lure of the Alps. Here you'll get to enjoy the peaks that rise to over 4000 metres, gorgeous alpine meadows and Switzerland's famed postcard chalets. And it's a natural beauty that's unabated the nation over. Alpine lakes with their wonderful beaches, forests and rolling hills all contribute to the unspoilt air of tranquillity.

Elsewhere – for a more cultural or historical experience – Switzerland boasts over 700 museums, acclaimed art collections and numerous festivals. So whether it's Geneva's Red Cross Museum, the classical musical events of Lucerne or Zurich's spring festival, you'll have no problem filling your days.

And of course, no mention of Switzerland would be complete without making reference to its food. Famed for its delicious cheeses, indulgent chocolates and guilt-inducing fondues, Switzerland is definitely a place to stick on your list if you're one of those people who document their travels with discarded napkins and lengthening belts.

Our only word of warning – temperatures can rise to a very pleasant 28C in July and August but can plummet to a numbing -2C in January and February. It certainly shouldn't put anyone off visiting this beautiful country – just be sure to pack a jumper if you're visiting in winter.
